Don't Waste Time -Do not stop looking!

Don't Waste Time

The proper way to look for a job requires doing … not waiting! The times I have been successful in my job hunt I have planted seeds and then done some follow up but if one is not careful they can soon do more follow up than seed planting!

How many times have we been told to be patient, expect a call and they just need to do their process but the job basically is ours?

Let’s look at these words “basically”, “formality”, “almost”

And the terms:

“just have to finish interview the other candidates but the job is yours”

“please tell your references to be expecting a call”

These previously mentioned examples are no substitute for an actual start date!

Do not stop looking!

I have had a few interviews that went very well and I was told “off the record” that the job was mine…all they had to do was attend to some minor details, get a signature, etc…

At times the person doing the interview is not the final decision maker...but implies they are…

It could be that the interviewer fails to understand their company’s hiring process…

Or…they just don’t want the tone of the interview to be negative or vague.

In case you are in a situation like this…do not be passive…this is your career!

It is critical that you keep moving forward to avoid costly delays in the hiring process…time spent celebrating or telling your friends and family about the job you MIGHT have is a reckless way of using your time.

Think of this in another way…is it possible that your “almost” job can instill you with a new-found confidence and boost your ego so that you can leverage it into a series of more powerful introductions?

Use your mini successes!

How many times have you heard “when it rains, it pours”?

That’s because sometimes things happen at once and we are forced to make difficult choices…we get 2 offers and we don’t know which one to take…but isn’t that a better problem to have than arrogantly assume you have a job in hand but waste time by celebrating instead of having a confirmed start date?

The behind the scenes decision making process can take far longer than you think…or, truth be told…longer than the interviewer knows…Be careful with these gaps of time that are spent waiting instead of doing…there is a danger of doing too much follow up…but instead, use your time for cultivating fresh opportunities for you career search..you cannot go wrong.Smothering the interviewer with too many calls is tempting to lock up the job..but that is not going to win you points unless you are trying to get a sales job…but even then, you will be thought of as desperate if you are not careful.Let it breathe…if you were professional in all of your actions and your references are not taken by surprise…or your references are not weak…you can shift your focus to harvesting a job offer complete with a start date. There is an old saying “a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush”Think about the last time you experienced a hollow victory…it can be a crushing blow when you believe something will happen…but it never results in anything concrete….don’t let that possibility prevent you from a potentially great opportunity!
