Starting a New career
How to be successful on your first day at the new job.

Successful new career.

  new career

The key thing for new people is to be aware of how there is a middle ground between staying in the present and planning for the future.

How many times have you heard people say “I remember when you were new, you couldn’t even…”
Don’t let that future scenario (if it ever occurs) deter you from the matter at hand.

You will be expected to be polite and to ask relevant questions not wow them with your awesomeness.

That will come later…,

You will be the object of stares and observation and you will endure some discomfort but that is life.

There is a bit of good and bad in all of us and that is never more apparent when starting a new job. If you are in a training room or orientation be prepared for the veteran staff to engage with you and make sure you are a thick skinned professional.
Why such a dim view?

Because it is human nature to be competitive and who doesn’t want to compile victories at the expense of the “newbie”?

An example of what you might hear:

What the last person in your position did

What the last person didn’t do

Where did you last work?

Why your last company company is good or bad

Why your new company is good or bad

How much is your starting salary?

What is your schedule?

Are you married?

Are you from here?

These are all things that are inconsequential in the grand scheme of things but can be your burden if you are not careful. You cannot unring a bell and you can never change your first impression.

Branding yourself/having others brand you as unfriendly or uninterested can take years to undo your reputation if you get started on the wrong foot!

Some playful banter is to be expected and it is not all doom and gloom but many people make the mistake of taking things too seriously or not at all seriously.

The best thing to do is aim for the middle.

Office-mate that want to establish the upper hand may seem like an unneeded and unfair distraction but human nature being what is requires our species to seek dominance.

Unfair maybe….The meek shall inherit the earth but they don’t always last very long in a competitive workplace.

So you got the job…congratulations!

That is the main thing isn’t it?

Focus on presenting yourself as a disciplined and cordial employee and you will be successful.

Get caught up in your feelings, your previous job hunt, your bitterness about how you used to be a really important person…and nobody cares..you will be an outcast in no time because nobody cares….

How many times have we seen somebody start off on the wrong foot talking about how they used to be a manager or used to be a big shot…why?

What’s the point?

Are they thinking it is a shortcut to respect?

Respect and potential are curious things…the first is given and cannot be asked for and the other is just another word for haven’t done it yet.

Your job is now yours…get ready for more success!
