How to Choose a Job After Graduation
This is a huge topic for many people and it was certainly not easy for me either. The dilemma I had was very common, do I follow the money or do I accept a position with a company that requires the training I obtained?
For those who graduated that have a specific technical or scientific background it can be both a blessing and a curse to have a narrow focus. But on the other hand, a specialist, when practicing patience, can set themselves apart by offering a skill set and education that is highly prized by the employer. The opposite seems to be true for those graduates that have a general purpose degree that seems to be too broad in scope to capture the attention of employers and recruiters.
I think there are pros and cons when considering one’s options after graduation…
I know 3 graduates that recently encountered the job market after graduating…
One was a graduate with a degree in accounting…she went to the same school as her sister who also graduated with a degree in accounting a year earlier…both had a GPA over 3.5. The sister that graduated first was involved in clubs and associates throughout school and seemingly pretty savvy when it came to networking and internships.
The other sister was just the opposite…she rarely socialized on campus and she kept to herself also, she held a job on campus that had little responsibility or people contact.
The third student was sort of but not really a graduate…sure she walked during the graduation ceremony and she didn’t correct anyone when they offered a hearty congratulations after the ceremony…but she was missing something…well several things actually…integrity was the main one…and 3 more classes in order to officially graduate.
She wanted to walk with her school friends and classmates..After all, it was her right..
Wasn’t it?
Well no…but that’s another story…
The first student immediately took the first job offered…she wanted income while looking for her “real” job…she did dirty work and it was clearly beneath her but she insisted on keeping a schedule and having money to get her own place without asking her parents for money. She was a dishwasher for a family restaurant…then she was a prep cook and she worked nights while interviewing during the day. Her hands were raw and chapped from using detergents and scalding hot water…but every night she repaired them with lotion and every week she got manicures.
She got her big break when she passed an interview for a large utility company that needed a staff accountant.
Her sister was the shy one…she tried to do things through her alumni association and career counselors…she lived with her mother and worked part time on campus.
She interviewed once a week for a few months and got a job at a financial aid office at an area college.
The third student was always great at networking...had traveled around the world throughout her college years and had an impressive social calendar. She didn’t drink or smoke but she went to every party she could. She would always have a story about how her rich friends will come through with the help they promised her. She supplemented this dream with no action on her part..she is still waiting.
