Employment performance -How to be a low maintenance employee.

Employment performance -How to be a low maintenance employee.
Employment performanceIt seems obvious doesn’t it?

Low maintenance means we go on about our business without making thing difficult for others, but if it is that easy why are so many branded high maintenance by their firms?

I have seen countless careers ruined or stalled based on the simple fact that people cannot resist asking instead of giving. Did I say asking?

Perhaps demanding is more like it…

One look no further than the human resources office to get a clear indication of what I mean.

Life in an office is simple…really simple…and it doesn’t matter if you know office politics or not…just treat people with respect and things will normally go smoothly.

Angrily demanding perks you may or not deserve or making frequent revisions to your schedule is selfish and affects other people.

A quick mention of a pet peeve…new people….asking..re-asking…and confirming..and re-confirming every nitpicking detail about perks.

I understand the need for clarity on the benefits package…but I have seen many egregious behaviors centered around petty scrutiny of perks.

Orientations that are designed to acclimate the newcomer are just that..designed to acclimate new people into the culture and it is an overview you are fortunate to get.

So…to have new people get into a spirited debate about special seating, the price of the vending machines, participating in greeting card sign up sheets and coffee clean up is absurd.
To waste valuable time with endless comparisons on how your last company did things seems a little self indulgent.

How about waiting to prove yourself and your value to the company before you start nickel and diming them?

I also believe nothing can ruin your reputation quicker than attendance and vacation time haggling.

I have seen genuinely gifted employees sabotage their careers by failing to arrive on time..or taking excessively long lunch hours…or calling in sick the day they are supposed to return from vacation.

In the end…we are professional and what we do speaks so well…words are hollow without the actions behind them.High maintenance people micro manage their timesheets and their payroll…instead of working at the job they are paid to do they send a strong message to management that they don’t trust them…that they must be double checked..On company time no less! The insult to injury factor does not go unnoticed…paying someone to go over their documents at the expense of a more productive task is very suspect.

If you have timesheets or invoices or payroll data..go ahead and review them….but please..don’t make a spectacle by flaunting your distrust in front of everyone.

I have seen people spread their documents out for all the world to see as they inspect everything inch by inch..they obsess over a perceived error that shorts them money or accolades….to the detriment of their company…when it is time for a performance review or promotion…are you going to reward the person who is paranoid the company is not treating him ethically?

Save your concerns for when you can do it discretely!
