Determine cable size

Determine electrical wire size using table 310.16 NEC2008 on page 70-148. Simply calculate amperage (current) flow through the circuit and then apply the table.

How to calculate current? In practice, we can find out power (W) and voltage (V) of equipments through vendor information. Based on this vendor information,we'll be knowing exactly how to power the equipment. If we lack of this basic knowledge, it is so dangerous.
For example, power a 120V pump through a 220V voltage source; you will burn out the pump.
Knowing power and voltage, current can be determined. See electrical formulas.
Be careful to apply the appropriate one phase or three phase formulas. Be plan in advance whether you will wire equipment at line to neutral or line to line voltage source.
V L-L=1.73* V L-N

Assume the current calculated result is 14A, electrical wire type is copper THHN, insulated conductors rated at 90° C, and so based on the table, wire size is 18 AWG. For practical safety application, recommended power wire size should be bigger than 12 AWG.
