No matter how careful a person tries to be, electrical accidents still have a tendency to happen. When someone gets an electrical shock, their breathing and their heart could stop. It could even damage a person’s brain. Electric shock has been known to damage nerves and muscles, and even burn a person’s skin. People should be aware of what to do in such an emergency. A good training program will help keep all employees up-to-date on the procedures that should be taken, if such an electrical accidents event should happen around them.
It does not matter if the person that has had an electric shock inside or outside, the steps are the same. First, do not touch the person, as you may become electrocuted yourself. The best way to help them is to find the source of the power and turn it off, if you cannot turn the power off yourself, immediately notify someone that can and get them on the sight as soon as it is possible. Then call the emergency phone number to get medical help to the person very quickly.
If you have turned the power off yourself and are absolutely sure there is no way that you can be shocked, you should check their breathing and make sure their heart has not stopped. More than likely you will find that it has, then you can begin giving them mouth to mouth resuscitation, or CPR. In some cases, both are necessary.
Always remember that water and electricity do not mix. Most everyone knows better than to use a water hose to extinguish an electrical fire, however, many do not realize that some fire extinguishers have water in them and it is very easy to pick up a water-filled fire extinguisher. Fire extinguishers have a code for each type of fire and the fire classes. It is extremely important that even the youngest person in each and every family should know what coding fires are rated at and what fire extinguishers should be used. This training should be started by the parents as soon as the child is old enough to talk and understand. This training should not stop there, but be carried out in schools and later in life on the job.
Remember to keep a check on any electrical plug in that may be close to some type of water, make sure that it can never fall in the water or get rained on. If some of the equipment that you are using gets wet, stop using it until it has had a chance to dry out completely. This type of electrical accident usually happens to employees who use electrical tools outside.
Some other tips on preventing electrical accidents are to remember that if you see a downed power line, do not touch it. Call the power company or 911 and report it, you may stay until the authorities arrive, just to warn other people about it.
Another thing to remember is that the best place to be during a thunderstorm is inside, away from any lightning, and away from fuse boxes as well. Try to avoid hiding under a tree or any tall object. However, being in a vehicle is also one of the safest places to be that a person can find. The rubber on the tires is made of a nonconductive material, and will insulate you from electrical shock.
