After company holiday party How to make it to work after the office party or company holiday party the night before.
I understand this is a career website…it is also filled with people reading and participating….which means we are all human. We all want to get and keep our job…so I say this in the gentlest way possible…don’t take days off for a hangover…you can muddle through and survive.
I will give you a personal narrative to make my point.
I used to work in the rough and tumble world of sales wherein we drank when we were happy and we drank when we were sad…and when there was nothing else to do…and only on days that ended in “y”Customers seemed like they were eager to let their hair down and have some fun, bosses needed to boost morale, and salespeople needed to drown their sorrow. In short, every single day there was a great reason to drink…and I did.
It got to the point where I cruised along with a fairly consistent blood alcohol count…I didn’t skip a day for years.I did my job and some days were great and some not so great..never had trouble with the law and never drove drunk. I managed to survive joys and sorrows by knowing how to deal with the morning after…I knew if I started to miss work I would make it such a regular habit that I wouldn’t have much of a career.
So here are some simple guidelines if you are struggling with balance on this topic. The office party, Super Bowl party, whatever the situation…try this…
Before you go out eat something starchy with some protein..ideally rice, noodles or bread…have some protein even if you don’t know exactly what…peanut butter will work fine. You will now have the energy to stand up straight while the others are eating party food that consists of empty calories and makes one crash afterword…greasy or sweet food is normally party fare but you have to work the next day so don’t even bother…Prepare to have a thick skin…drinkers want you to drink with them…if you don’t…they are offended…they will ask if you are too good to drink with them, etc…
Believe it or not you will find that your party behavior will come into play at some point when they evaluate your ability to get along with others…
If you must drink make sure you are carrying something at all times…noting like an empty glass to draw attention to you and soon you will be put on the spot.
When I quit drinking I still would attend parties but I would have club soda and juice.
The glass looked mysterious enough that people assumed I was drinking an alcoholic drink.
When you start to mix with people it is essential that you don’t just park in one spot all night…it is a good opportunity to get to know people you normally don’t have the chance to speak with.As you mingle be light on your feet and keep moving if you feel awkward rather than endure discomfort or engage in a conversation that may come back to haunt you.
When you are ready to leave try to tell at least a few people how you wish you had a little more time to speak to them…you are not required to give a reason for leaving but it reassures the host that you enjoyed yourself.
The next day if you have a hangover you can go one of two ways depending on the severity…
Gatorade/ Powerade or club soda and bitters.
Bitters comes in a small bottle and it comes out one tiny drop at a time…shake the bottle violently until the club soda is as dark as cola…if this doesn’t work I will assume a doctor is needed…but seriously, it will indeed get you on track. " After company holiday party " written by Ken Bownes
