Reason For Leaving Job

Reason For Leaving

Every employer will ask you why you are leaving your current position and there is only one answer that seems to be universally accepted. I also believe there is something people fail to understand…the hidden traps:

…the tone you use

…do you hesitate?

…are you confident?

…are you trying to escape a bad situation? (are you going to a new job with a clear conscience or outrunning drama?)

…are you slamming your employer/ will you also slam the new employer someday?

There is only one answer I would ever use when giving a reason for leaving my current job:

“I would like more of an opportunity to advance because unless someone retires or leaves, there is nowhere for me to go”What this answer tells them is that you are not content with standing still yet you are not motivated to seek change for the sake of change.

Most Human Resource people dread asking that question because so few people answer it skillfully…yet it is crucial to determining the suitability of the candidate. If one cannot answer that convincingly and confidently isn’t that an early warning sign that there is a job hopper in the midst?

Or worse yet…someone who is always blaming others and reacting…possibly someone who cannot peacefully and productively work with others. The whole interview is basically trashed if all the answers are great…but the reason for leaving is wrong…or poorly stated.

Building a career is a balancing act…make no mistake…it is a series of steps that either go forward or standstill.

A recruiter viewing a resume will look to see if someone is restless and slippery…do they transfer often within their own company?

Do they make dramatic and sweeping geographical changes more than once?

Do they have an education that speaks to their potential…but every job seems to be a statement about failed expectations?Recruiters specialize in a couple of basic things…they see many resumes and they interview many people…they are notoriously difficult to fool!

So the next time you think your half hearted answers are not noticed…or your sloppy resume doesn’t betray you..think again. The reason for leaving is not a trick question…it is a crucial opportunity for you to seize control by confidently -communicating how you are in command of your destiny!
You are making a career move based on your goals and inspiration and you are interviewing companies to determine their suitability to your needs. If you can communicate that level of confidence you will be rewarded…do your research ahead of time so the opportunity to understand the fit is established…on the other hand…waste the interviewer’s time with poor conversation flow and displaying surprise over basic questions about where you have been and where you are going…and you will shut down your chances significantly.

There is a saying…”take the bull by the horns” and nowhere is this saying more appropriate than the interview…the interviewer is a human being..they actually want you to succeed!

They take absolutely no pleasure in watching you fall apart…they want to screen applicants, true…but they are not enjoying torturing you!

Their job is far easier if you are able to answer questions that are important…so stop thinking of “trick questions”, there is no such thing and if you cannot handle simple questions they may start to believe you would fold under the daily pressure on the job.
