When it is Time to Leave Your Job

Leave Your JobWhen it is Time to Leave Your Job

When the writing is on the wall and we have outstayed our welcome how will we know?

Will it be obvious or a series of hidden traps that we ignore until it is too late?

Sometimes an employee is completely tone deaf about their value to a company and they have a false sense of their value. Some other times people are valuable contributors and are taken advantage of beyond reason and they should consider leaving for a better situation.

So, whether it is your decision or theirs there are certain warning signals that are important to heed. Perhaps you can make improvements and get back on track but if not…

Some examples include:

Have you been demoted?

Have you been written up with warnings when you are unclear why?Have they stopped including you in discussions about future plans?

Are your new assignments more suitable for a person with a lesser job responsibility?

Have you been split from your former team members?

Have you been given numerous seating reassignments?

Do they pull you off projects before they are finished?

Are your plans and proposals ignored?

Have you been given reduced input?

Most positions have a job description and a clear sense of what is expected with the added caveat that there are times that you are required to perform a function that was not anticipated…but all of that being said there is normally a sequence of events that began the discomfort.

How to get at the root of them?

I believe the worst time to think is when you are forced to..and it is far better to periodically review performance when you are not under pressure during a crisis.

How many of us can provide an honest evaluation of our performance without making excuses?

Are we quick to justify and blame our actions based on what others failed to do?

Is it really necessary to have a “cover yourself” file?In some state and government jobs there is another name for it: CYA file…

Let’s just say that “A” refers to a part of the body you sit on…But the value of the file is that you have a paper trail of actions and reactions you did with a clear timetable of events if ever you are questioned about your actions.

I am not big on conspiracies and I truly try to see the good in others…I honestly believe that we are all someone’s daughter or son and we are doing the best we can..we are not demons and terrible people…but we are human and we make mistakes based on fear, anger and other reasons…

But what do we do if we are wrongly accused of something?

Isn’t is better to politely and confidently offer evidence of our innocence?

It is a slippery slope once we are cornered..protest too much and we arouse suspicion…passively listen to accusations and we are thought to have nothing to say in our defense…

If we are able to save our job…please do everything you can to save it…if the job is worth keeping!
